Cost of Living Forum

One of the most pressing issues of our time is cost of living, whilst many large companies did well during covid19, our broken welfare systems left those most at risk far worse off. This forum brings together people in the community who work tirelessly to ensure no-one goes without.
We will platform and highlight the experiences of those with lived experience of the struggles in relation to cost of living, and those on the other side who provide support - noting these often interchange. Those with the least are always the first to give, because they know what it is like to be on the other side.
Whilst we will be discussing difficult topics, there is much hope. With politicians who care, things can and should be better. These grassroots organisations showcase the good that already exists in Canberra.
Speakers include:
Jodie, McLeod's Angels, founder of an Indigenous-led initiative supporting at risk Indigenous peoples with meals and practical support, and also teamed up with Winnunga Nimmityjah Health Care and offered to transport people to vaccine hubs.
Vanessa, Cafe Stepping Stone, owner of a social enterprise that provides inclusive employment and practical training opportunities for migrant and refugee women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds through an innovative and sustainable vegetarian cafe.
Souzan Kareem, an active member of the Sudanese Community in Canberra, human rights advocate and community worker in Canberra. Souzan is an activist who works tirelessly for justice, cares deeply for the community, and leads many campaigns to support the Sudanese community especially in light of the ongoing revolution.
Amanda Kay has worked in the community sector as a social worker and counsellor for many years. She is an advocate for improving the lives of Canberrans doing it tough and has dedicated much of her life improving people’s quality of life and access to support.
Paul McGrath & Greg Marshall from Ngunnawal Street Pantries and This is My Brave, who have opened their home to provide food, clothing, and even new home starter packs for the most vulnerable in our community. They even helped gown at-risk teens so they could attend their school forum! They have created countless partnerships, including with local bakeries who drop off their left-overs at the end of the day. Once the baked goods have arrived, people line up to get their dinner - all from Margret's garage!! Not only do they help the most vulnerable but they aim to work using the circular economy framework.
Canberra's housing prices are now $1,015,900. We have over 38'000 people, 9'000 of which are children, living below the poverty line.
Join us on Wednesday to hear from community leaders, and Kim on our solutions to tackle Cost of Living in the ACT.
There will be opportunity for you also to discuss your concerns, meet the speakers and Kim.
